Team India lifted the trophy of the inaugural season of the ICC T20 World Cup contested in South Africa, 2007. After a long-drawn match, India managed to sleek a victory by five runs left. Irfan Pathan was named the Player Of The Match.
That was the beginning of a dominating era of team India. They then went off and won the 2011 ICC World Cup, with Dhoni hitting the final six with that beauty of a helicopter shot.
Pakistan managed to win the following tournament, held in 2009, by beating Sri Lanka in the finals hosted in England. They won by eight wickets, and Sahid Afridi was named the player of the match.
In 2010, England won the tournament by defeating the Aussies. England won by seven wickets, and Craig Kieswetter was named the Player of the Match.
In 2012, West Indies won by defeating Sri Lanka on their home ground. West Indies won by 36 runs, and Marlon Samuels was the Player of the Match.
Finally, in 2014, after losing two finals, Sri Lanka won the tournament by defeating India. Sri Lanka won by six wickets, and Kumara Sangakkara was named the Player of the Match.
West Indies won the latest edition of the tournament in 2016 by defeating England by four wickets. Marlon Samuels carried the team to victory by scoring 85 runs, not out. More on Hotstar
Hotstar was developed in 2015 by the star network to provide more streaming services in India. Star CEO Sanjay Gupta said, “there weren’t many platforms available to Indian consumers offering high-quality, curated content besides, say, YouTube.” He also explained that the service would appeal most prominently to the growing young adult demographic and feature “very targeted” advertising. He estimated that by 2020, the service could account for nearly a quarter of Star’s annual revenue.
Hotstar got a significant boost in users count after the launch of LTE by JIO in 2016. JIO provided free unlimited internet for three months and later extended it for two more months. Due to the free services, people left no opportunity to gaze on these OTT platforms.
After receiving the new funding from Star US holdings, Hotstar decided to create more original content to upload to the app. This was done to compete with other streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime. Amidst concerns, the service was beginning to haemorrhage cash.
Disney+ with Hotstar.
Later, in 2020, after the Walt Disney Company bought the rights of the Star Networks in 2019, they integrated Disney+ with Hotstar. This was solely done to introduce Disney+ to Indian users. Disney would not have succeeded if it wasn’t for Hotstar. In India, OTT platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime had already established a strong following. So to compete with them, Disney came up with the idea of integration with Hotstar.
The Motley Fool described Hotstar as Disney’s strategy to enter the Indian market.
The service officially launched with a “virtual red carpet premiere” of The Lion King and Disney+ series The Mandalorian, featuring actors Rana Daggubati, Katrina Kaif, Shraddha Kapoor, Hrithik Roshan, and Tiger Shroff participating in live interactions.
