The Indian Premier League 2022 IPL Kicks off on March 26. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has complied with the demands of Star, the host broadcaster, which requested a Saturday. On Thursday evening (February 24), the IPL Governing Council (GC) decided.

With a busy virtual meeting, the GC has also confirmed that the IPL will be held in Maharashtra, with 55 games in Mumbai and 15 in Pune. Four stadiums have been identified for the league, with 20 games being held at Wankhede, 15 at Brabourne, 20 at DY Patil, and 15 at the MCA ground in Gahunje.

Brijesh Patel, IPL chairman, confirmed the news and said the tournament would not be played in front of empty stands, except for the UAE leg of IPL 2021. The IPL will start on March 26, and the full schedule will be released soon. We will also have crowds, but as per the instructions from the government. Whether it will be 25 percent or 50 percent of the stadium’s capacity will be decided by the government,” the IPL chairman explained.

The BCCI has categorically stated that the 10-team league will not go overseas for the first time. There have been plans to visit overseas venues, like South Africa and Sri Lanka, but the improved Covid situation in India has encouraged the BCCI to host the league itself. The exact number of days and a full schedule will be released soon, as Patel said.

The BCCI has also identified four grounds for teams to practice on. Teams will be able to use the BKC ground in Bandra Kurla Complex in Mumbai, Brabourne Stadium in South Mumbai, DY Patil ground in Navi Mumbai, and MCA Ground in Kandivali or Thane.

For the first time, the IPL has been able to fill up all six sponsor slots – one title sponsor and five associate sponsors. Every year, there are usually a few vacant spots.

Additionally, BCCI has made decisions regarding Women’s IPL, which is expected to start next year.
