The German Football League System organizes the DFL SuperCup, or German Super Cup, every year. Fans and experts consider this tournament to be the start of the German football season, with the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal winners competing for the title.
After ten seasons, DFB execs decided to start a six-team tournament called the DFL Ligapokal after the tournament was played for the first time in 1987. After a crowded schedule forced the DFB to suspend the competition in 2008, the DFL Ligapokal was officially canceled one year later. Under its current format, the DFL Super-Cup has been played without any complications since then.
In contrast to other countries, the DFL Super-Cup is played either at the stadium of the DFB Pokal winners or at the stadium of the Bundesliga runners-up. To promote competition, this decision was made so the Bundesliga champions are not as comfortable as in other countries. Throughout the 20 editions of the DFL-Super-Cup, seven teams have claimed the award.
Dortmund hosted the 2019 DFL Super-Cup at Signal Iduna Park. Bayern München’s three-year dominance in this competition ended when the hosts defeated them 2-0. Borussia Dortmund won its sixth title in this competition, with four of those victories coming as champions of the DFB-Pokal.
